Share of Renewable Energy in Kazakhstan’s Electricity Generation Continues to Grow

Img 8696

According to the 2024 National Report on the State of the Environment and the Use of Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the share of renewable energy sources, excluding large hydropower plants, reached 6.2% of total electricity generation in 2024 — an increase of 0.3 percentage points compared to 2023.

The transition to renewable energy is a global process of replacing fossil fuels (coal and natural gas) with environmentally clean energy sources, such as wind and solar, aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and addressing climate change. This transition has become an irreversible global trend, driven by the declining cost of renewable technologies and accelerated decarbonization efforts worldwide. In 2024, global investment in renewable energy exceeded investment in fossil fuels, marking a historic shift in the energy sector. By 2030, renewable energy is expected to supply nearly half of global electricity demand.

Kazakhstan is actively developing its renewable energy sector, aiming to increase the share of renewables to 15% by 2030 and to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. The combined capacity of the country’s wind and solar power plants is projected to exceed 8.4 GW. Kazakhstan has one of the highest wind energy potentials in the region, estimated at 920 billion kWh per year.

According to the Bureau of National Statistics, 148 renewable energy facilities with capacities above 100 kW were operational in 2024, with a total installed capacity of 2,903.7 MW, including:

- 59 wind power plants – 1,409.55 MW;

- 40 small hydropower plants – 269.785 MW;

- 46 solar power plants – 1,222.61 MW;

- 3 bioenergy plants – 1.77 MW.

In 2024, these renewable energy facilities generated: wind power – 3,224.7 million kWh, small hydropower – 944.4 million kWh, solar power – 1,612.62 million kWh, bioenergy – 0.56 million kWh.

The expansion of renewable energy contributes to environmental safety, job creation, and a reduction in the cost of electricity generation.

As previously announced, the Regional Ecological Summit will be held in Astana on 22–24 April 2026, where Central Asian countries will discuss pressing environmental and climate challenges. Two dedicated sessions will focus specifically on the deployment and use of renewable energy sources.
