Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity, Ana Schoemaker, during bilateral talks with the Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Yerlan Nyssanbayev, commended Kazakhstan’s efforts in environmental protection and accepted the invitation to participate in the Regional Ecological Summit, which will take place in Astana on April 22–24, 2026. 

The meeting between Schoemaker and Nyssanbayev took place on September 25, 2025, on the sidelines of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

The parties discussed current issues related to the implementation of biodiversity conservation measures and policies, as well as prospects for strengthening cooperation and promoting synergies among the three Rio Conventions — on climate change, biodiversity, and desertification. Special attention was given to the importance of integrating efforts across Central Asia to ensure sustainable natural resource management and ecosystem preservation.

The discussion was also attended by Yerlik Karazhan, Head of the Project Office for Climate Change and Green Energy under the Central Asia Climate Fund. The Project Office plays a key role in the organizational and substantive preparation for the 2026 Regional Ecological Summit in Astana.

Ms. Schoemaker praised Kazakhstan's environmental initiatives, expressed her readiness for active cooperation with the Kazakh side, and confirmed her participation in the upcoming Regional Ecological Summit.
